As part of the Town Council’s ongoing safety programme, phase 3 of memorial testing in the Gainsborough General Cemetery has been underway throughout the summer of 2024, with phase 1 and 2 taking place in prior years.

These ongoing checks are essential for checking the stability and safety of memorials, imperative for the safety of all visitors and workers in the General Cemetery.

With on-site inspections being conducted by memorial mason Retford Memorials throughout May to the end of July, the inspection data has been logged and the process of informing grave owners of failing memorials has begun.

It’s essential to note that all memorials remain the responsibility of the grave owner to maintain in good and safe order. In the event a grave owner passes away, the exclusive rights of burial ownership do not automatically transfer to the next of kin, therefore contact must be made with the Town Council to establish next steps and ensure the burial rights are transferred to the rightful owner(s).

This particular phase of memorial testing covered over 4900 memorials in the older side of the General Cemetery, covering sections of ACO, ANC and BCO (all viewable on the online cemetery map).

If you’d like to know more about the process of memorial testing, including the steps involved in visual and physical inspection, please refer to our post from earlier this year for more information.

If you have any concerns or queries regarding a memorial in the Gainsborough General Cemetery or North Warren Cemetery, please contact the Town Council on 01427 811573.
