PL27/083 Motion: Request for Additional Speed Limit Signage on Lea Road
Proposed by: Councillor Richard Thompson
I wish to request that the appropriate highways authority reviews the provision of speed limit signage and road safety measures on Lea Road, between the Ashcroft Road roundabout and the roundabout adjacent to the Ford showroom.
Although this section of road is already subject to a 30mph speed limit, residents have raised concerns that many motorists regularly exceed the limit, particularly during the evenings and after 10.00 pm. There have also been reports of modified vehicles travelling at excessive speeds, creating the impression that this stretch of road is being used as a racetrack.
There is concern that there are insufficient or poorly visible 30 mph signs between Lea and Morton, which may contribute to drivers failing to observe the speed limit. Residents fear that without further action there is a risk of serious injury to pedestrians and other road users.
It is understood that there have been approximately five road traffic accidents on this section of road over the last seven years, including one fatality. This underlines the need to review whether additional safety measures are required.
Therefore, I move that the committee:
- Requests a review of the existing 30 mph signage on Lea Road.
- Asks the highways authority to consider installing additional and more prominent 30 mph signs where appropriate.
- Investigates whether vehicle-activated speed warning signs could be installed.
- Reviews accident data and traffic speeds on this stretch of road.
- Considers any other appropriate measures to improve road safety and encourage compliance with the existing speed limit.
This motion is submitted in the interests of improving road safety for residents, pedestrians and all road users.
PL27/084 Foxby Lane – Proposed 30MPH and 40MPH Speed Limit
The proposed reduction in speed limits, to 30mph and 40mph as shown on the attached plan has been justified against the criteria set out in the county council’s speed limit policy.

26080602 – 3 mph in a 30-mph speed limit
26080609 – 1mph in a 60-mph speed limit
23060610 – 8 mph in a 30-mph speed limit
Paper G (pages 64 to 67)
